Introduction

The purpose of this report is to inform the reader of the inventory management that Carvel Ice Cream enforces. This report will outline what Carvel does, how it does it, and how it could do it even better. It will identify ways that Carvel has improved its productivity and quality over the last few years. We will also recommend specific courses of action that will lead to further productivity and quality improvements.

Carvel is a well-known ice cream franchise. They are best known for their ice cream cakes and soft serve ice cream. The entire ice cream industry has reached a mature stage. Ice cream shops are beginning to make more ice cream in the parlor rather than buying it from a supplier. Many operations occurring in Carvel are ordering products, scheduling and managing employees, marketing, keeping track of costs, creating cakes, deliveries, and just keeping the store clean.

Carvel has been in the ice cream-making business for over 75 years. There are over 500 locations, and products are sold in over 8,500 supermarkets nationwide. Many of their products include their high-quality ice cream cakes filled with the famous and delicious “crunchies,” soft serve ice cream served in cups or cones, sundaes, and shakes, and novelty items such as the Flying Saucer or Brown Bonnet, which can also be purchased in most grocery stores. According to their company page, they have about 1,000 current employees. Their billing department processes nearly 35,000 transactions monthly. Carvel has grown from an East Coast chain of ice cream parlors to a manufacturer and distributor of ice cream products.
