Recommendations
Based on our interview with Mr. Woodward and Ms. Espinosa, we can recommend Carvel to acquire a computer system, which will allow for more inventory control, inventory cost and payroll control. Inventory costs will be controlled by ordering the right ingredients from the right distributor at the right time. Computer systems will also increase time management and efficiency as the manager would not have to spend so much time on the phone. She will be able to fax or email an order, increasing her time with the customers providing a better customer experience.
Internal controls reduce the change of internal waste and theft by having an electronic inventory. A clock in and out system will save money in knowing how much time is worked exactly by each employee. Management systems can help keep track of the training an employee has achieved. Not having documented training limits the growth of the employee. From the human resources side, this becomes difficult in the event that they need to terminate someone’s employment. Without documentation, the human resources department would not be able to proceed accordingly with employment laws. Flexibility is very well done when customers place orders. However, we can recommend also being flexible before a customer places an order. Carvel could have special promotions for an item or product, that way they can keep track of how many customers have allergies or like a certain flavor in their cakes.
